The club won the first match in Porto Alegre 3-1 and drew 1-1 in Medellín, securing the second continental title, after the one won in 1983. The attack featured Paulo Nunes and Mário Jardel. In December 1995, the team played in the Intercontinental Cup in Tokyo against Ajax, European champions. The match ended scoreless in regular time and the Dutch club won on penalty kicks, but the campaign remained in the memory of Grêmio's fans.
