Grêmio's 1997 team won the Copa do Brasil championship by defeating Flamengo in the final. It was the club's third title in the competition, after victories in 1989 and 1994.

History

Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense reached 1997 at the peak of one of the most victorious periods in its history. In the mid-1990s, the club had won the Copa do Brasil in 1994, the Copa Libertadores in 1995, and the Brazilian Championship in 1996, as well as the 1996 South American Recopa. After coach Luiz Felipe Scolari's departure at the end of 1996, Grêmio remained competitive and focused on the Copa do Brasil, a tournament in which it had already been champion in the first edition in 1989 and again in 1994. In the 1997 final, the Rio Grande do Sul club faced Flamengo and emerged victorious, winning its third title in the competition. The trophy reinforced the club's reputation as a specialist in knockout tournaments. Grernio would go on to win the Copa do Brasil again in 2001 and 2016, becoming one of the greatest champions in the tournament's history.
