Grêmio 2018

Grêmio's 2018 team was the squad that followed up on the 2017 Copa Libertadores campaign under the command of Renato Gaúcho. They won the Recopa Sudamericana and the Campeonato Gaúcho and reached the Libertadores semifinals.

History

The 2018 season started with Grêmio still riding high from winning the Copa Libertadores in 2017, the third title in the club's history. In December 2017, the team had lost the FIFA Club World Cup final to Real Madrid 1-0, with a free-kick goal by Cristiano Ronaldo. Renato Gaúcho remained as head coach and kept the core of the continental champions squad. At the start of the year, the team won the 2018 Recopa Sudamericana against Independiente, champions of the 2017 Copa Sudamericana, repeating the title the club had already won in 1996. In the state championship, Grêmio were champions of the 2018 Campeonato Gaúcho, in a sequence of titles that would extend across the following seasons. In the 2018 Copa Libertadores, Grêmio advanced to the semifinals, where they were eliminated by River Plate, who later won the tournament in the final against Boca Juniors. Throughout the year, the club also lost midfielder Arthur Melo, who was sold to Barcelona. Grêmio's 2018 is remembered as the end of the winning cycle that began with the 2016 Copa do Brasil and the 2017 Libertadores.
