Grêmio Esportivo Bagé

Grêmio Esportivo Bagé is a traditional club in Gaucho football, founded in the city of Bagé, on the border of Rio Grande do Sul with Uruguay. It is one of the centenary clubs of the state and ranks among the five greatest champions of the Gaucho Championship since 1919.

History

The club was born on August 5, 1920, from the merger between Sport Club 14 de Julho and Sport Club Rio Branco, two local clubs that decided to join forces to strengthen the city's football. The founders, including Átila Vinhas, Carlos Brasil and Leonardo Teixeira, chose the yellow of Rio Branco and the black of 14 de Julho as the colors of the new club. In just its fifth season of existence, Bagé surprised the state by winning the 1925 Gaucho Championship, defeating Grêmio itself in the final played at Estádio da Baixada, in Porto Alegre. The achievement consolidated the club as a powerhouse in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, at a time when championships were dominated by teams from the capital. Throughout its history, Grêmio Bagé remained one of the main representatives of the Gaucho Countryside, competing in access divisions and the Gaucho Championship itself on several occasions, always with strong support from the local community. In 2020, the club celebrated the centennial of its foundation, reaffirming its historical role in Rio Grande do Sul football, playing its matches at Estádio Pedra Moura, with a capacity of 10,000 spectators.
