Grêmio Esportivo Renner
Historic workers' club from Porto Alegre, linked to the A.J. Renner industries. Made history by winning the Gaúcho Championship in 1954, breaking the hegemony of the Grenal duo in Rio Grande do Sul football.
History
Grêmio Esportivo Renner was born in 1931 in the Navegantes neighborhood in Porto Alegre as a club for workers of the A.J. Renner industrial group. It was a typical factory club, a common model in Brazilian football in the first half of the twentieth century, and quickly established itself among the leading forces in Porto Alegre football. The peak came in 1954, when Renner won the Gaúcho Championship. The achievement is still remembered today because it interrupted the absolute dominance of Grêmio and Internacional in the state — one of the rare times in history when the state title did not go to the Grenal duo. The campaign transformed the small workers' club into a symbol of resistance for smaller teams in Rio Grande do Sul. A few years after the historic achievement, the club ended its professional football activities in the late 1950s, when the company stopped supporting the department. Despite its short trajectory, Renner remains in the memory of Rio Grande do Sul football as the club that challenged the giants — and won.
