History
Sapucaiense was founded in 1941 following the closure of Grêmio Esportivo Iraí, created in 1936, and retained the red and black uniform and the field of the previous club, where Arthur Mesquita Dias Stadium stands today. Until 2004 it operated as an amateur club, competing in local championships. In 1999 it was champion of the Copa Sul Under-21, a state competition for athletes under 21 years old. It turned professional in 2005, when it began competing in Series A2 of the Gaúcho Championship and the FGF Cup. In 2007 it achieved its first-ever promotion to the state first division, and in 2008, in its debut year, finished the Gauchão in sixth place.
