Gremio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense

Gremio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense

One of the greatest clubs in Brazilian football, Gremio is known for its traditional technical football and for having won the Copa Libertadores on three occasions.

History

Founded by German immigrants and their descendants in 1903, Gremio quickly became a force in Gaucho football, historically rivaling Internacional in the Gre-Nal classic. In the 1980s, the club experienced its international peak, winning the Copa Libertadores de América and the Intercontinental Cup in 1983, under coaches such as Valdir Espinosa. The club shone again in 1995, with another Libertadores title, and once more in 2017, under Renato Portaluppi's command, also winning the Club World Cup that year in a symbolic way by finishing second to Real Madrid. In addition to continental titles, Gremio has accumulated domestic achievements such as the 1996 Brazilian Championship and several editions of the Copa do Brasil, establishing itself as one of the country's greats.
