Gremio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense
Gremio is one of the most traditional clubs in Brazilian football, with strong support in Rio Grande do Sul. It is known for its historic rivalry with Internacional in the Grenal.
History
Founded in 1903 by German immigrants in Porto Alegre, Gremio quickly became one of the main clubs in southern Brazil. Throughout the 20th century, it won several state and national titles, consolidating itself as a force in Gaucho football. The international peak came in 1983, when the team won the Copa Libertadores de America and the Intercontinental Cup, defeating Hamburg in the final. The team repeated the continental achievement in 1995 and 2017, showing the club's tradition in South American competitions. On the national stage, Gremio won the Brazilian Championship in 1981 and 1996, as well as multiple editions of the Copa do Brasil. The rivalry with Internacional, disputed in the classic Grenal, is one of the most traditional in the country. In 2018, the club opened the Arena do Gremio, one of the most modern stadiums in Brazil, reinforcing its structure for the following decades.
