Guarani 1978

The 1978 Guarani was the Brazilian champion team that year, in one of the biggest surprises in tournament history. Managed by Carlos Alberto Silva, the Campinas club defeated Palmeiras in the final. It was the greatest achievement in Bugre's history.

History

Guarani Futebol Clube was founded in Campinas in 1911 and spent decades as a club of regional tradition in the interior of São Paulo. In 1978, under the command of coach Carlos Alberto Silva, the team put together an organized and competitive squad for the Brazilian Championship. The campaign led Guarani to the final against Palmeiras, and the Campinas club emerged victorious. The title made Guarani the first club from the interior of São Paulo to win the Brazilian Championship, and it remains the greatest glory in Bugre's history. The individual highlight of that team was striker Careca, who established himself in Brazilian football in that season and would later go on to São Paulo, the Brazilian National Team, and Italian football. The Brinco de Ouro da Princesa was the venue for great nights during the campaign. After the 1978 title, Guarani returned to reach a national final in 1986, when it was the Brazilian runner-up. The 1978 team, however, remains the most remembered in the club's history.
