History

Heracles Almelo was founded in 1903 in the city of Almelo, in eastern Holland, and has its name inspired by the mythological hero Hercules. In the first decades, it established itself as the main club in the Twente and Overijssel region. The most victorious period was the first half of the twentieth century. The club won the national championship in 1926-27 and again in 1940-41, the only Dutch championship titles in its history. After the era of titles, Heracles went on to alternate seasons in the first and second divisions of Dutch football, playing the role of a mid-sized club with strong identification with the city of Almelo. In recent decades, the team has re-established itself in the Eredivisie and is known for developing and valuing young players. Its home matches are played at Erve Asito, a stadium located in Almelo.
