Hibernian FC

Hibernian FC

Hibernian FC is one of Scotland's most traditional clubs, founded in 1875 in Edinburgh by Irish immigrants. Historic rival of Heart of Midlothian in the Edinburgh derby, the club is remembered for its legendary attacking line of the 1940s and 1950s, the famous 'Famous Five'.

History

Founded on August 7, 1875 by members of Edinburgh's Irish Catholic community, Hibernian FC has roots deeply tied to Irish immigration in Scotland. The name 'Hibernian' derives from the Latin name of Ireland, reflecting the identity of the club's founders and the history of a community seeking belonging and representation through sport. Hibernian's historical peak came in the 1940s and 1950s, when the club had the legendary attacking line known as the 'Famous Five': Gordon Smith, Bobby Johnstone, Lawrie Reilly, Eddie Turnbull and Willie Ormond. This quintet enchanted Scotland and projected the club internationally, being considered one of the best attacks in the history of British football. Hibernian also has historical significance in the European context: it was one of the first British clubs to compete in the European Cup, in the inaugural 1955-56 edition, reaching the semi-finals. This pioneering spirit reflects the ambition and importance of the club on the continental stage. In 2016, Hibernian ended a 114-year drought by winning the Scottish Cup, ending one of the longest waits in Scottish football. The derby against Heart of Midlothian, the 'Edinburgh Derby', is one of the oldest and most passionate classics in world football.
