This is where nicknames such as Los Acereros, Siderúrgicos and Campeón del Sur come from. The original colors were red, blue and white, and black and blue were adopted in 1967. The club reached the first division in 1966 and won its first national title in 1974, which gave it a spot in the 1975 Copa Libertadores. The second title came in the 2012 Clausura Tournament, which took it back to the Libertadores in 2013. The third Chilean title was in 2023, decided dramatically in the last round, with Huachipato confirming the championship with a one-point advantage. This secured participation in the 2024 Libertadores. In 2025 the club won the Copa Chile.
