Inter Milan 1964-1965
Inter Milan in 1964 and 1965, known as Helenio Herrera's Great Inter, was a two-time European champion and two-time World Club champion. It is considered one of the greatest teams in the history of Italian football.
History
Inter, managed by Argentine coach Helenio Herrera, dominated European football in the first half of the 1960s. The team became known for a tactical system called catenaccio, based on solid defense and quick counter-attacks. In 1964, Inter won the European Cup of Champions by defeating Real Madrid 3-1 in Vienna, with two goals from Sandro Mazzola. In the same year, they defeated Independiente, from Argentina, in the Intercontinental Cup final. In 1965, the team repeated the continental feat by defeating Benfica 1-0 at San Siro, with a goal from Brazilian Jair. Inter also won the 1965 Intercontinental Cup, again against Independiente. The team's core consisted of Sarti, Burgnich, Facchetti, Picchi, Guarneri, Suárez, Jair, Mazzola, Peiró and Corso. At the national level, Inter was Italian champion in 1962-63, 1964-65 and 1965-66.
