History

Sport Club Internacional was founded in 1909 in Porto Alegre. In 1969, the club inaugurated the Beira-Rio Stadium, on the banks of the Guaíba River, and began a period of dominance in Rio Grande do Sul football. From 1969 to 1976, Inter won eight consecutive Gaucho Championships, the eight-in-a-row, one of the greatest streaks in the history of Brazilian state competitions. In the mid-1970s, the team gained national prominence. With Chilean defender Elías Figueroa and midfielder Falcão, the club won the Brazilian Championship in 1975, with Figueroa scoring in the final against Cruzeiro, and in 1976, under coach Rubens Minelli. This period established Beira-Rio as one of the country's most important stadiums and formed the foundation of the generation that would remain competitive in the Brasileirão through the end of the decade, with the undefeated title of 1979.
