Sport Club Internacional (São Paulo)

Sport Club Internacional (São Paulo)

One of the pioneering clubs of São Paulo football, founded in 1899 with the purpose of accepting members from all nationalities. It was São Paulo champion in 1907 and 1928 before merging and disappearing in the 1930s.

History

Sport Club Internacional of São Paulo was founded in 1899, in the same period as the first football clubs in the city. Its name reflected the open nature of the association, which accepted members from any nationality — in contrast to clubs from specific colonies, such as Germânia. Internacional participated in the first editions of the São Paulo Championship and won the title in 1907, placing itself among the champions of the pioneering era of Brazilian football. Two decades later, in 1928, it was São Paulo champion again, this time already in a much more competitive scenario, with Corinthians, Palestra Itália and Santos consolidated. In the 1930s, with the arrival of professionalism and financial difficulties, the club lost strength. In 1933 it ended up involved in mergers that gave rise to new associations, ending its own trajectory. The club is remembered as one of the founding names of São Paulo football, and its example even inspired the choice of the name of Internacional from Porto Alegre.
