History
Itaperuna Esporte Clube was founded on July 21, 1989, in the city of Itaperuna, in Northwest Fluminense, from the merger of three local clubs: Porto Alegre Futebol Clube, Comércio e Indústria, and Unidos Atlético Clube. The new club incorporated the assets of these associations and adopted the colors of Porto Alegre, whose successor it became. The main sporting legacy before the merger is the 1985 Rio de Janeiro Championship Series B1 title, won by Porto Alegre. Even before officially existing with its current name, the club was already on the national scene: in 1988, Porto Alegre competed in Series C of the Brazilian Championship. Shortly after its creation, Itaperuna appeared in the Second Division, competing in Series B of the Brazilian Championship in 1989, 1990, 1991, and 1992, and returned to the third division in 1995, according to the club's historical records. The team plays its home matches at Jair Bittencourt Stadium, with a capacity of around 10,000 people, and is known as the Eagle of the Northwest, in reference to the Fluminense region where it is based.
