History

The Juventus Football Club was founded in 1897 in Turin and is the most successful club in Italy. In the mid-1980s, the team brought together a squad that combined the 1982 World Cup champion Italian core with foreigners like Frenchman Michel Platini and Pole Zbigniew Boniek. Under the command of Giovanni Trapattoni, the team won the 1983-84 European Cup Winners' Cup and, in January 1985, the UEFA Super Cup, defeating Liverpool 2-0. On May 29, 1985, Juventus defeated Liverpool 1-0 in the European Cup final at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels, with a penalty goal by Platini. The match was marked by the tragedy that preceded the game, when 39 people died. In December 1985, in Tokyo, the team drew 2-2 with Argentinos Juniors and won the Intercontinental Cup on penalties. In the 1985-86 season, Juventus was still the Italian champion.
