KFC Uerdingen 05
KFC Uerdingen 05 is a club from Krefeld, Germany, known for decades as Bayer Uerdingen. The highlight of its history was winning the German Cup in 1985, defeating Bayern Munich in the final.
History
KFC Uerdingen 05 was founded in 1905 in the Uerdingen district, in Krefeld, in the Rhine region. Throughout the 20th century, the connection with the Bayer company gave the club structure and projection, and it became known as Bayer Uerdingen, a name it kept until the mid-1990s. The team reached the Bundesliga in 1975 and played several seasons in the elite of German football between the 1970s and 1990s, generally as a mid-table team capable of surprising the big clubs. The greatest achievement in the club's history came in 1985, when Bayer Uerdingen defeated Bayern Munich 2-1 in the German Cup final in Berlin. In the following European Cup Winners' Cup campaign, the team staged a historic comeback against Dynamo Dresden and reached the semifinals, where they were eliminated by Atlético Madrid. After leaving the Bundesliga, the club went through ups and downs, with a return to professional football in lower divisions and periods of financial difficulties in the 2020s, but the 1985 title remains the great symbol of its trajectory.
