Kickers Offenbach

Traditional club from the state of Hesse, in Germany, founded in 1901. DFB-Pokal champion in 1970, it was twice German runner-up and became known for revealing the Bundesliga match-fixing scandal in 1971.

History

The Offenbacher Fußball-Club Kickers 1901 was founded on May 27, 1901 in Offenbach am Main, a city neighboring Frankfurt. The proximity created an intense rivalry with Eintracht Frankfurt, one of Germany's most traditional regional derbies. Before the Bundesliga's creation, Kickers reached two German Championship finals: in 1950, it lost to VfB Stuttgart, and in 1959 was defeated by Eintracht Frankfurt itself in extra time. The club's greatest achievement came in 1970, when it defeated 1. FC Köln 2-1 in the DFB-Pokal final, held in Hanover. In 1971, president Horst-Gregorio Canellas revealed recordings that exposed the Bundesliga match-fixing scandal, one of the gravest episodes in German football history. Kickers competed in several Bundesliga seasons throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Among the players who played for the club was Rudi Völler, who played in Offenbach in the late 1970s before gaining national prominence.
