History

Founded in 1928 in the municipality of Leganés, south of Madrid, the club spent most of its history in the lower divisions of Spanish football, never having competed in the first division until the 2010s. The rise began consistently from the 2010s onwards, when the club invested in structure and youth categories, culminating in its unprecedented access to La Liga in the 2016-17 season. Since then, Leganés has lived a cycle of rises and falls between the elite and Segunda División, always with organized football and a loyal fan base at Estadio Municipal de Butarque. One of the most remarkable moments in recent history was the Copa del Rey campaign of 2017-18, when the team eliminated Real Madrid in the round of 16, a feat celebrated as one of the greatest upsets in the competition that decade. Without titles of national significance, Leganés has established itself as an example of a club managed with financial sustainability, maintaining competitive presence in Spanish football and returning to the first division in recent seasons after squad and technical staff reformulations.
