Liverpool 1977
Liverpool's 1976-77 team, managed by Bob Paisley, was English champion and won the club's first European Cup, defeating Borussia Mönchengladbach in Rome.
History
In the 1976-77 season, Liverpool won their tenth English championship title. The team amassed 57 points with 23 wins, 11 draws, and 8 losses, scoring 62 goals and conceding 33, finishing just one point ahead of Manchester City. The manager was Bob Paisley. The club pursued an unprecedented feat for an English team: winning the First Division, the FA Cup, and the European Cup in the same season. On May 21, 1977, at Wembley Stadium, Liverpool lost the FA Cup final to Manchester United 2-1, with a goal by Jimmy Case. Four days later, at the Olympic Stadium in Rome, the team defeated Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 and became European champions for the first time. Terry McDermott, Tommy Smith, and Phil Neal, from a penalty, scored the goals. Liverpool became the second English club to win the European championship. Kevin Keegan, the season's top scorer with 20 goals in all competitions, played his last match for the club in the Rome final and moved to Hamburg for 500,000 pounds, a British record at the time. The team also won the 1976 Charity Shield, defeating Southampton 1-0, with a goal by John Toshack.
