Maccabi Haifa FC

One of Israel's most traditional and successful clubs, Maccabi Haifa is the country's most decorated league champion and became known internationally for surprising campaigns in the UEFA Champions League.

History

Founded in 1913 in the port city of Haifa, Maccabi Haifa is one of Israel's oldest clubs and one of the pillars of the Maccabi sports movement in the country. Throughout the 20th century, it established itself as one of the dominant forces in Israeli football, competing at the top of the national standings with Maccabi Tel Aviv and Beitar Jerusalem. The club accumulated the most league titles in Israeli football history among all clubs in the country, building a record of dominance especially strong in the 1980s and 2000s. It plays its home matches at Sammy Ofer Stadium, one of Israel's most modern stadiums. On the European stage, Maccabi Haifa is remembered for historic results in the UEFA Champions League group stage, including a 5-2 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford in the 2002-03 edition, one of the most memorable results in the club's continental history. Decades later, the team regained international attention by defeating Juventus 2-0 on home soil during the 2022-23 Champions League group stage, reinforcing its reputation as a recurring giant-killer against European powerhouses. Currently, Maccabi Haifa remains one of the protagonists of the Ligat Ha'Al (Israeli championship) and a benchmark for international competitiveness in Israeli football.
