Malaga Club de Futbol
Andalusian club founded in 1994 after the refounding of the former CD Malaga, had its sporting peak in the early 2010s, when it competed in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in its history.
History
Malaga Club de Futbol was born in 1994 from the refounding of the bankrupt Club Deportivo Malaga, taking the place of the old club in the Spanish second division. Since then, the Andalusian club alternated seasons in La Liga and the second division, always with strong support from the fans at La Rosaleda stadium. The most significant moment in the club's recent history occurred after its purchase by the Qatari group Al-Thani in 2010, which invested heavily in player signings and projected Malaga to unprecedented levels. In the 2012-13 season, the club achieved a historic place in the UEFA Champions League, reaching the quarter-finals of the competition, eliminated by Borussia Dortmund in a dramatic match. After the financial peak, Malaga faced severe economic difficulties, suffering budget cuts and successive relegations, even competing in Segunda Division B and Primera RFEF in the following years, far from the brilliance of the European campaign.
