History
Founded in 1916 on the island of Mallorca, RCD Mallorca built a strong identity in Spanish football over decades. For many years it oscillated between the first and second divisions of Spain, but always maintained a loyal fan base in the Balearic Islands, becoming the largest club in the region. The club's golden period came in the late 1990s, when, under ambitious sports management, Mallorca became one of the most respected clubs in La Liga. In 1998, it won the Copa del Rey by defeating Athletic Bilbao, and shortly after reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1999, being defeated by Lazio. The club revealed and hosted players of the highest international level. Cameroonian Samuel Eto'o played on loan for Mallorca before becoming a star at FC Barcelona, having been revealed to the world precisely through his performances on the island. Other international names passed through the club throughout its rich history. After periods of financial difficulties and relegations, Mallorca returned to the elite of Spanish football in the 2020s, confirming its relevance as one of Spain's traditional clubs. With the refurbished stadium and renewed project, the club continues to seek a place among La Liga's protagonists.
