Manchester City 2011-12
Manchester City's 2011-12 season saw them crowned Premier League champions with 89 points, deciding the title on the final day against Queens Park Rangers. Under Roberto Mancini's command, the team ended a 44-year drought without winning the English championship.
History
The 2011-12 season consolidated the project that began after the Abu Dhabi United Group's purchase of the club in 2008. Under Italian Roberto Mancini, who took over in December 2009, the squad brought together players such as Sergio Agüero, signed from Atlético Madrid, as well as David Silva, Yaya Touré, Vincent Kompany and goalkeeper Joe Hart. City thrashed Manchester United 6-1 at Old Trafford in October 2011, and led the Premier League for much of the season. In April, United opened up an eight-point lead, but City fought back and won the derby at the Etihad 1-0, a goal from Kompany, on April 30, reaching the final day level on points with their rivals. On May 13, 2012, City needed to beat QPR at home. They were losing 2-1 deep into stoppage time, when Edin Džeko equalized and Agüero scored at 93 minutes and 20 seconds the 3-2 winner, while United beat Sunderland 1-0. Both teams finished with 89 points, and City took the title on goal difference: 93 goals scored and 29 conceded, a difference of +64 against United's +56. It was the club's first English title since 1967-68 and the first in the Premier League era. In the Champions League that same season, City was eliminated in the group stage and then fell to Sporting in the Europa League Round of 16. Mancini left the club in May 2013.
