History
Manchester United was founded in 1878 and rose again after the Munich air disaster in 1958, which claimed members of the team coached by Matt Busby. The manager rebuilt the squad over the following decade. In the 1960s, the club won the English Championship in 1964–65 and 1966–67. In 1967–68, it finished as national runner-up, behind Manchester City, but progressed further in Europe. The European Cup final was played on May 29, 1968, at Wembley against Benfica. The match ended 1-1 in regular time, with goals from Bobby Charlton for United and Graça for Benfica. In extra time, George Best, Brian Kidd, and Charlton scored, and United won 4-1. The title made Manchester United the first English club to win the European Championship and symbolized the club's recovery ten years after the Munich disaster.
