Maranhão Athletic Club
The Maranhão Athletic Club is one of the most traditional clubs in Maranhão football, a historical reference in the Maranhão Championship alongside Sampaio Corrêa and Moto Club. Founded in São Luís, it built its identity from decades of state competitions.
History
Founded in the Maranhão capital in 1946, Maranhão Athletic Club was born amid the effervescence of amateur football in the city of São Luís, quickly professionalizing itself and becoming one of the protagonists of the Maranhão Championship throughout the 20th century. Throughout its trajectory, the club alternated periods of regional strength with phases of reconstruction, maintaining itself as one of the most remembered clubs by the local fans, especially in the classics against Sampaio Corrêa and Moto Club, which historically divide the preference of Maranhão residents. Like several clubs in the North and Northeast of the country, Maranhão AC faced structural and financial difficulties at certain moments, which limited more consistent participations in national competitions organized by the CBF, focusing mainly on the state scene. Currently, the club continues to compete in the Maranhão Championship, keeping alive its centennial tradition of almost eight decades and serving as a breeding ground for players for the region's football.
