Foot Ball Club Melgar

Foot Ball Club Melgar

Club from the city of Arequipa, one of the main representatives of Peruvian football outside Lima, national champion on two occasions.

History

The Foot Ball Club Melgar was founded in 1915 in the city of Arequipa, southern Peru, being one of the most traditional and popular clubs outside the capital Lima. The club's name honors the Peruvian poet and hero Mariano Melgar. For decades, Melgar was one of the main representatives of the Peruvian interior in the first national division, with good campaigns in continental tournaments such as Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana. In 2015, the club won its first national title, winning the Decentralized Tournament of the Peruvian Championship, a historic achievement for Arequipa football. In 2024, Melgar was again champion of Peru's Liga 1, establishing itself as one of the forces in Peruvian football in the 2020s, with home ground at the Monumental Stadium of the National University of San Agustín.
