History

Metropol was founded in Criciúma on November 15, 1945, in an environment marked by coal mining. During its early years, it was an amateur team made up of workers from Metropolitana Coal Company. In 1959, Metropolitana Coal Company elevated the club to professional status and began financing player acquisitions. Executive Dite Freitas headed the professional football department, and the investment earned it the nickname 'Catarinian Real Madrid'. The results came quickly: Metropol won the Catarinian Championship in 1960, 1961, and 1962, and won the state title again in 1967 and 1969. In 1962, it made a tour of Europe with 13 victories, 6 draws, and 4 defeats. On the national stage, it won the South Bracket of the Brazil Cup in 1964 and achieved its best campaign with a 5th place finish in 1968. The professional department was shut down in 1969, and the club remained only in amateur competitions.
