MTK Budapest is one of Hungary's most successful clubs, with 23 national titles and 12 Hungarian Cups. Founded in 1888, it was runner-up in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1964.

History

MTK was born on November 16, 1888, in a Budapest café, as Magyar Testgyakorlók Köre. Among the founders were aristocrats and members of the capital's Jewish community. The club initially offered fencing and gymnastics, and the football section was created on March 12, 1901. The team rose to the first division in 1903 and won its first Hungarian championship in 1904. Between 1913-14 and 1924-25, it dominated the country's football with ten consecutive titles, in a notable rivalry with Ferencváros. After World War II, the communist regime placed the club under the control of the ÁVH secret police, and the name changed to Textiles SE in 1950, Bástya SE in 1951, and Vörös Lobogó SE in 1952. With that latter name, it was in 1955 the first Hungarian team to compete in the European Cup. As MTK, it reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1964 and lost to Sporting. In 2001 it founded the Sándor Károly Football Academy, dedicated to training young talent.
