Nagoya Grampus

Nagoya Grampus is one of the traditional clubs of the J1 League, based in the city of Nagoya. It became widely known worldwide in the 1990s for signing European stars, becoming Japanese champion in 2010.

History

The club originated in 1939 as the football team of Toyota Motor Corporation, competing for decades in Japanese amateur football before the sport's professionalization in the country. With the creation of the J.League in 1991, the team became professional, adopting the name Nagoya Grampus Eight, in reference to the coat of arms of the city of Nagoya, which evokes a mythical marine creature, and to the number of districts in the city. In the 1990s, the club gained international notoriety by signing renowned European players, a typical movement of the J.League's initial boom in attracting well-known names from world football to Japan. These signings helped popularize the club and the Japanese league itself outside of Asia. The greatest moment in Grampus's history came in 2010, when the team won its first J1 League title under the technical command of a former player who had played for the club in the previous decade, ending a long drought of major national titles. Beyond the league title, the club also won the Emperor's Cup on more than one occasion, establishing itself as one of the most traditional teams in the Chubu region, in central Japan.
