Napoli 1987-1990

Napoli from 1987 to 1990 was the team of the Maradona era, which won two Scudetto titles, one Coppa Italia, the UEFA Cup and the Italian Super Cup. It was the most victorious period in the history of the Neapolitan club.

History

Napoli was founded in 1926 and had never won the Italian Championship when Diego Maradona arrived, coming from Barcelona, in 1984. With the Argentine as technical leader and symbol, the club assembled a team capable of challenging the dominance of the great teams from northern Italy. In the 1986-87 season, under the command of coach Ottavio Bianchi, Napoli won their first Scudetto in history and also the Coppa Italia, in the club's first double. The achievement changed the city's relationship with Italian football and transformed Maradona into the maximum idol of the fans. In the following seasons, the team finished as Italian runners-up and reinforced the squad with Brazilian Careca, the striker from the attack known as Ma-Gi-Ca (Maradona, Giordano and Careca), and with midfielder Alemão. In 1988-89, Napoli won the UEFA Cup by overcoming Stuttgart in the final, in two matches, with 2-1 in Naples and 3-3 in Germany. In 1989-90, now with Alberto Bigon as coach, the club won their second Scudetto and, subsequently, the Italian Super Cup in 1990. Maradona's suspension in 1991, after a doping test, ended the team's golden era, and they have not been Italian champions since then.
