New York City FC is a Major League Soccer club created in 2013 through a partnership between City Football Group, owner of Manchester City, and the New York Yankees. It made its MLS debut in 2015 and won the MLS Cup in 2021.

History

MLS announced New York City FC as the league's 20th franchise in May 2013. The club was born from an association between City Football Group, which controls Manchester City, and the New York Yankees, and began competing in the league in 2015. In the early years, the team relied on renowned names such as David Villa, Frank Lampard, and Andrea Pirlo. Villa became the great symbol of the initial phase and the club's all-time leading scorer. The club played its matches at Yankee Stadium, a baseball stadium adapted for football, and also used Citi Field in occasional games. This space limitation motivated the project for its own stadium. In 2021, under the command of coach Ronny Deila, New York City FC won the MLS Cup by defeating Portland Timbers on penalties, after a 1-1 draw in regular time. It was the first MLS title in the franchise's history. The club built Etihad Park, a stadium exclusively for football in the Queens neighborhood in New York, with inauguration scheduled for 2027.
