Newcastle Jets

Australian club from Newcastle, New South Wales, founded in 2000 and one of the original members of the A-League. Won the Australian championship in the 2007-08 season.

History

Newcastle Jets was created in 2000 as the successor to Newcastle Breakers and began competing in the A-League from the league's inaugural season in 2005-06, as one of eight founding clubs. The club's greatest moment in history came in 2008, when the team won the A-League grand final against Central Coast Mariners, with a goal from striker Mark Bridge, winning the only national title in the club's history to date. In the following years, Jets experienced a long period of administrative instability, even having its license withdrawn from the ownership group in 2015 and being administered directly by the Australian federation before new investors took over. The club returned to compete in a final in the 2017-18 season, when it finished as runner-up after losing the grand final to Melbourne Victory. It plays its home matches at Newcastle Stadium, commercially known as McDonald Jones Stadium.
