History

Notts County was founded on 28 November 1862, in Nottingham, and is regarded as the oldest professional football club in the world still in activity. In 1888, it was one of the twelve founding clubs of the Football League, the first professional football league on the planet. In 1894, the club won the FA Cup by defeating Bolton Wanderers 4-1, at Goodison Park, becoming the first team from a lower division to lift the trophy. In 1910, Notts County began playing its matches at Meadow Lane, a stadium it has used until today, on the banks of the River Trent, facing the field of rival Nottingham Forest. The club also has influence beyond England: in 1903, Juventus adopted the black and white stripes after receiving shirts from Notts County, and the bianconero uniform has been used since then. Throughout the twentieth century, Notts County won titles from the Second Division (1897, 1914, and 1923), the South Third Division (1931 and 1950), the Fourth Division (1971), and the Third Division (1998), as well as the Anglo-Italian Cup in 1995. In 2010, the team was champion of League Two. In 2019, it was relegated to the National League, leaving the Football League for the first time in 157 years, and returned to the EFL in 2023 through the playoffs of the fifth division.
