Grêmio Esportivo Olímpico
Grêmio Esportivo Olímpico is a club from Blumenau, in Santa Catarina, two-time champion of the Catarinense Championship in 1949 and 1964. Today it continues as a social club, without professional football since the 1970s.
History
Olímpico originates from Turnverein Blumenau, founded by German immigrants on October 5, 1873. The football department has a disputed founding date: the club adopts August 14, 1919, while historians consider August 14, 1920 more plausible, though unproven. The club operated as Sociedade Desportiva Blumenauense until 1944, when it became Grêmio Esportivo Olímpico, as a rule at the time prohibited country, state, or city names in club names. Alongside Palmeiras EC, Olímpico was one of the most successful clubs during the peak of Blumenau football. It won the Catarinense Championship in 1949 and 1964 and the Blumenau City Championship in 1943, 1949, 1951, and 1961. The 1964 state title took the club to the initial phase of the 1965 Copa do Brasil. In the 1970s, Olímpico deactivated professional football and remained active as a social club.
