Olympique de Marseille 1993

The Olympique de Marseille of 1993 was the first and only French club to win the UEFA Champions League. Coached by Raymond Goethals, it defeated Milan 1-0 in the final played in Munich.

History

The Olympique de Marseille was founded in 1899 and became one of the most popular clubs in France. Under the presidency of Bernard Tapie, who took office in 1986, the club assembled a million-pound squad and won four consecutive French titles from 1989 to 1992. The obsession with Europe led OM to the final of the Champions Cup in 1991, in Bari, which was lost on penalties to Red Star. Redemption came on May 26, 1993, at the Munich Olympic Stadium: the team of Raymond Goethals, with Didier Deschamps as captain, defeated Milan 1-0, with a header goal by Basile Boli in the 43rd minute of the first half, after a corner kick taken by Abedi Pelé. The triumph was followed by a scandal. After the revelation of an attempt to manipulate the match against Valenciennes, OM lost the 1992-93 French title and was administratively relegated to the second division in 1994. The club was also banned from playing the Intercontinental Cup, but retained the European title, which remains the only one won by a French club in the competition.
