Founded in 1944, Operário de Várzea Grande is one of the oldest clubs in Mato Grosso football, having competed in several editions of the Mato Grosso Championship. The club experienced periods of state prominence, competing with major teams from the state capital Cuiabá for regional titles throughout the 20th century. Currently, it maintains participation in the state divisions, preserving the football tradition of the Cuiabá metropolitan region.
