Palestra Itália (1932-1936)

Palestra Itália was the former name of what is now Palmeiras until 1942. Between 1932 and 1936, this São Paulo club achieved three consecutive Campeonato Paulista championships (1932, 1933, and 1934) and won the state title once more in 1936.

History

Palestra Itália was founded on August 26, 1914, in São Paulo, by Italian immigrants and their descendants. From the outset, the club established itself among the greats of São Paulo football and built a large following both within the Italian community and beyond. In the first half of the 1930s, the team experienced one of the most victorious periods of its early history. The club became Campeonato Paulista champions in 1932, 1933, and 1934, creating a three-peat championship, and won the state title once more in 1936. The team played its home matches at Parque Antarctica in the Água Branca region of São Paulo, which became the club's home and is the origin of Palmeiras' current stadium. In 1942, during World War II, the club abandoned the name Palestra Itália, which referenced Italy, an Axis nation, and became Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras. The change preserved the club's history, colors, and titles won until that point.
