Palestra Itália 1920

The Palestra Itália of 1920 was the team of the club founded by Italian immigrants in São Paulo that won the first title of the São Paulo Championship. The club would only adopt the name Palmeiras in 1942.

History

Palestra Itália was founded on August 26, 1914, in São Paulo, by members of the Italian colony. The team's debut took place in January 1915, against Savoia, from Votorantim. In 1920, just six years after its founding, Palestra Itália won the São Paulo Championship, the first state title in its history. The conquest consolidated the club among the biggest teams in São Paulo, at a time dominated by teams such as Paulistano and Corinthians. The original colors of the club were green, white and red, inspired by the flag of Italy. In 1942, during World War II, the club dropped the name Palestra Itália and became known as Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras, a name it maintains to this day.
