Palmeiras 1942

Palmeiras in 1942 was the first team to play under its current name, adopted in September of that year replacing Palestra Itália. In the final round of the Campeonato Paulista, it defeated São Paulo 3-1 and won the title.

History

Palmeiras Sports Association was founded on August 26, 1914 by Italian immigrants under the name Palestra Italia. In 1942, during World War II, Brazil began restricting names linked to Axis countries and the club had to abandon its original name. On September 14, 1942, the club adopted the name Palmeiras. A few days later, on September 20, it faced São Paulo in a match that decided the Campeonato Paulista and won 3-1, at Pacaembu stadium. The conquest became known as the Heroic Breakthrough and is remembered as the title that consolidated the club's new name. Palmeiras continued as one of the major forces in São Paulo football in the decades that followed.
