History
Palmeiras' 1959 team was the São Paulo State Championship champions, breaking the Santos hegemony that had grown strong at the end of the 1950s. Santos had won the state championship in 1958 and would be champions again in 1960. The squad was strengthened with players of great prestige. The left-back Djalma Santos, two-time World Cup winner with the Brazilian national team, began defending the club during that period, and the winger Julinho Botelho, an icon of Fiorentina, also joined the group. The 1959 São Paulo State title was one of the landmarks of the beginning of a very successful phase. In 1960, Palmeiras won the Brazil Cup, which gave them a spot in the 1961 Copa Libertadores.
