Palmeiras 1965
Palmeiras 1965 was one of the great squads of the so-called Second Academy, with players such as Ademir da Guia, Djalma Santos and Dudu. The team won the Rio-São Paulo Tournament that year and was even lined up as the Brazilian National Team in a friendly match against Uruguay.
History
Founded on August 26, 1914 as Palestra Itália, the club changed its name to Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras in 1942. In the mid-1960s, Palmeiras brought together a technical generation that became known as the Second Academy of Football, with Ademir da Guia as the main conductor of the midfield. In 1965, the team won the Rio-São Paulo Tournament, a competition that brought together the main clubs from both states and had enormous prestige at the time. The squad included players such as Djalma Santos, Dudu, Julinho Botelho and Ademir da Guia. In the same year, in September, Palmeiras was called up en bloc to act as the Brazilian National Team in a friendly match against Uruguay, in Belo Horizonte, an episode that became one of the most emblematic in the club's history and which attests to the recognition of Palmeiras' football during that period.
