The 1969 Palmeiras team was champion of the Roberto Gomes Pedrosa Tournament, the Robertão, a competition recognized by the CBF as the Brazilian Championship. The title was the club's fourth national championship, and Cruzeiro finished as runner-up.

History

The 1969 Roberto Gomes Pedrosa Tournament brought together 17 clubs from seven states. In the first phase, the clubs were divided into two groups, one with eight and another with nine teams, and all faced each other in a single round-robin format. The top two teams from each group advanced to a final four-team tournament, also in a single round-robin format. Palmeiras reached the decisive phase and finished the four-team tournament as champions, ahead of Cruzeiro. The title decision came down to goal differential, the tiebreaker criterion set out in the regulations. The CBF recognizes this conquest as the club's fourth national title, following the 1960 Brazil Cup and the two titles of 1967 (Brazil Cup and Robertão). The team had César Maluco as its leading goalscorer in the competition, with 13 goals. Ademir da Guia, the club's great star of the time, scored twice in a 3-1 victory over Botafogo. The squad also included goalkeeper Leão and defender Luís Pereira, players who remained important in the team that dominated Brazilian football in the years that followed. The tournament's top scorer was Edu, from America-RJ, with 14 goals. The 1969 Palmeiras team is remembered as one of the pieces in the transition between the 1967 championship-winning generation and the Football Academy that won the Brazilian Championships of 1972 and 1973.
