Palmeiras 1998
Palmeiras in 1998 was the team led by Luiz Felipe Scolari that won the Brazilian Cup and the Mercosur Cup in the same year. The team formed the base of the squad that, in 1999, would lead the club to the Copa Libertadores title.
History
The year 1998 was one of the most victorious in Palmeiras' recent history. Under the command of Luiz Felipe Scolari, Verdão assembled a competitive squad, with names such as goalkeeper Marcos, midfielder Alex and striker Paulo Nunes, and began fighting for titles in all competitions they played in. In that season, the club won the Brazilian Cup, Palmeiras' first title in the competition, and also the Mercosur Cup, played in its first edition. The two achievements consolidated the team as one of the main forces in South American football at the end of the 1990s. The 1998 performance continued the work that, the following year, would result in the conquest of the 1999 Copa Libertadores, the club's first continental title. For this reason, the 1998 team is remembered as the consolidation phase of one of the most victorious groups in Palmeiras' history.
