History
Palmeiras was founded on August 26, 1914, in São Paulo, as Palestra Itália, and adopted its current name in 1942. In 2021, the club was experiencing one of the most successful periods in its history under Abel Ferreira's command, who took over the team in October 2020. The team had won the 2020 Libertadores in January 2021, with a 1-0 victory over Santos at the Maracanã, with a goal by Breno Lopes. In the same season, Palmeiras also won the 2020 Copa do Brasil, whose final was played in March 2021. In the 2021 Libertadores, the club reached the final against Flamengo, played on November 27, at the Estadio Centenario, in Montevideo. Raphael Veiga opened the scoring, Gabigol equalized and Deyverson scored the winning goal in extra time, making it 2-1. With this, Palmeiras joined Santos (1962 and 1963) as the only Brazilian clubs with two consecutive titles in the competition. The continental campaign took Palmeiras to the FIFA Club World Cup, played in February 2022, in the United Arab Emirates. The team reached the final, but lost to Chelsea 2-1 in extra time, with a penalty goal by Raphael Veiga.
