History

Partick Thistle was founded in 1876 in the Partick district of Glasgow, and today plays in the Maryhill neighbourhood, where Firhill Stadium was inaugurated in 1909. The club has always lived in the shadow of the city's giants, Celtic and Rangers. The first major title came in 1921, when Partick won the Scottish Cup final against Rangers 1-0. The achievement remains to this day the most important in the club's history in domestic knockout competitions. In October 1971, the team surprised Scottish football by thrashing the mighty Celtic 4-1 in the League Cup final at Hampden Park, in one of the biggest upsets in the tournament's history. The club also won the Scottish second division in the 2012-13 season, returning to the elite, and remains one of the most popular mid-tier clubs in the country.
