Paulista Football Club 2005
The 2005 Paulista from Jundiaí is one of the greatest underdogs in Copa do Brasil history. The interior São Paulo team won the national title and secured an unprecedented spot in the 2006 Copa Libertadores.
History
Paulista Football Club, founded in 1909 in Jundiaí, experienced in 2005 the most remarkable year of its history. Managed by coach Vágner Mancini, the club competed in the Copa do Brasil as a representative of the São Paulo interior and eliminated higher-investment opponents throughout the knockout stage. In the final, Paulista faced Fluminense. In the first leg in Jundiaí, they won 2-0 at Jayme Cintra Stadium. In the return leg at the Maracanã, they held a goalless draw and lifted the trophy, becoming 2005 Copa do Brasil champions. The title earned the club qualification for the 2006 Copa Libertadores, the first and only participation of Galo da Japi in the continental competition. The team fell in the group stage, but the campaign remained marked as a symbol of the strength of interior clubs in Brazilian football.
