Paysandu 2003

Paysandu in 2003 staged the most celebrated campaign of a club from Northern Brazil in the Copa Libertadores, including a historic victory over Boca Juniors at the Bombonera.

History

Champions of the Copa dos Campeões in 2002, Paysandu secured an unprecedented spot in the 2003 Copa Libertadores, becoming the first club from the Northern Region to compete in the group stage of the competition. The team advanced from the group stage and faced Boca Juniors in the Round of 16. After losing the first leg at home in Belém, Papão defeated Boca 1-0 at the Bombonera in Buenos Aires — a result that went down in the history of Pará football, though it proved insufficient for qualification. Boca Juniors that year would go on to win the Copa Libertadores and the World Club Cup, which enhanced the prestige of the Pará victory. The 2003 campaign remains Paysandu's highest reference in international competitions.
