Penarol Athletic Club

Penarol Athletic Club is the leading club of the interior of Amazonas, based in Itacoatiara. Inspired by Uruguayan Peñarol, it wears yellow and black and is known as the Lion of Old Serpa.

History

Founded in 1947 in Itacoatiara, a city on the banks of the Amazon River known as Old Serpa, Penarol Athletic Club adopted the name and colors in homage to Peñarol of Montevideo, one of the giants of Uruguayan football. For decades, the club competed in amateur football and regional competitions in the interior of Amazonas, establishing itself as the greatest sporting expression of the municipality. Professionalization brought the Lion of Old Serpa to the state scene, where it began to challenge the traditional clubs of Manaus in the Amazonas Championship. The conquest of the state title in 2011 was the highlight of this trajectory, a historic achievement for an interior club of the state, which guaranteed Penarol a spot in national competitions. In the following years, the club represented Amazonas in the Copa do Brasil and in the Brazilian Championship Series D, bringing large crowds to Floro de Mendonça Stadium. Penarol remains a symbol of Itacoatiara and a reference for football in the interior of the North region.
